The Crow-kins Unite!

The Growing Resistance... (detail) - ceramic - 2025, BG Dodson.

***

Everywhere around the world a rallying cry is beginning to rise... against tyranny... against censorship, against incompetency and indifference to injustice. Perhaps, it's humanity's last stand before the self-designated overlords do what overlords do best: suppress... oppress... distress.

It pays to stay one step ahead. We might ask ourselves: "where will I be a year from now?" If present global trends continue - that is, the continuing disablement of the working class* - the choices we have may be limited. This applies especially to the most vulnerable members of society. (Inset left, Dodson's Scenes from the Circus of Dreams, 2023.)

How do the powerless practice dissent? First, keep in mind, no true individual, nor group of individuals is without power. We swim in the same primordial ocean. We each have the ability - and the authority - to express ourselves. And, if, within our lifetimes our autonomy is threatened, it is our responsibility to defend it. It is our right; it is our life. And, so it goes...

Expression comes in many forms. One of the highest forms and most desirable of forms is humor. Humor is not heartless... and, often, it inspires free will. Anger serves a similar purpose, in art it's both energizing and cathartic.** but, today we'll conjure with a lighter touch... the Crow-kin troops of BG Dodson!

My guess is that artist and sculptor, BG Dodson, had, at some point in his early existence, a close encounter of the special kind with members of the Corvidae species. After all, the city of Portland in BG's home state of Oregon, is not only known as the City of Roses, it has also been referred to as the City of Crowses.

Perhaps, a tiny crow embryo - a thought-form, you understand - fell into into the convoluted contours of young BG's growing brain one day. Hence, the (eventual) artful birth, the mysterious emergence, the unforeseen disentanglement of the first member of the Crow-Kin species. (Inset left, Murder Most Fowl, 2016, Dodson.)

Ah, but, once those cunning little Crow-kins got started, there was no stopping them!

In reference to The Growing Resistance, sources tell me that they're possibly on their way to Washington... or maybe a (red) town near you. Ranks of them, clouds of them... like something out of an Alfred Hitchcock film. (And you know just the one.)

It goes without saying, then, that once the Crow-Kins have taken flight, "no-fly zones" - a formality they scoff at - will become functionally obsolete.

The Growing Resistance... (detail #2) - ceramic - 2025, BG Dodson.

In the photograph above, the ceramic Corvidae army kind of remind me of those ancient Chinese terracotta warriors uncovered in 1974. Note, in this Smithsonian article, each soldier was carved to represent a different individual... an expression of warfare we have rarely seen.

A few more words about BG: he is one of the most spirited, inventive, and prolific artists I know. The photos inset throughout this post are a few examples of his work. (Inset right are an interesting set of mono-printed stones from 2023.) All (and much more)(!) can be found at his online workshop. The Crow-kins can be adopted from one of the following online galleries:

  1. 👏👏👏🙌🤟 Superb post. Let us, these small black crows, unite into a murderous flock of feather flown resistance against the growing vile storm of hate. Loved the still from "The Birds" - I remember seeing this movie at a small coastal drive-in as a child. Perhaps that's the incident that imprinted me.
